… All Canoe Club facilities are now open, with regular hours of operation as follows:

  • Restaurant: Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 4 p.m. (lounge), 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. (dinner). Reservations are available to property owners only, and are recommended – call Clubhouse Manager Manny Belete at 843.706.6027.
  • Movement Studio: Yoga classes – Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, 9 a.m. Spinning classes – Saturdays, 7:30 a.m. Pilates, toning and aerobics classes to be announced soon – watch PB Online for details.
  • Fitness Center: Daily, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Personal trainers available – call 843.706.6608 to schedule.
  • Pool: Daily, 9 a.m. to dusk. Food service 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (beverages until 4 p.m.)

… The May River Golf Course and the May River Grill will be closed from June 2 through the morning of June 6, with tee times resuming at noon on the 6th. The pro shop and practice areas will remain open while annual maintenance is conducted on the course during this time.

… The first two retails shops of Boat House Row are open. Fine Furniture Galleries/Coastal Living Interiors specializes in classically styled upholstered and leather pieces. Michael Rainey Antiques features 18th-century and early 19th-century American furniture and accessories. Both stores’ hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.

Edible and Medicinal Plants of Palmetto Bluff will be the subject of the First Friday event on June 6. Forestry and Wildlife Manager Jay Walea will discuss native plants that hold edible and medicinal properties – plants that we walk among on a daily basis – and equip you with basic identification tools, while sharing some neat facts about different species and their uses by humans and wildlife. Come early to the Conservancy Nature Center (in the Post Office building) and enjoy complimentary wine and cheese at 5:30 p.m., followed by the program at 6 p.m.

RT’s Market will host its monthly Wine Tasting on Friday, June 13 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The featured wines may be purchased at a 10% discount during the event, and a variety of Market product samples will be available for tasting. Call RT’s at 843.706.3448 for more information.

… Two Property Owner Grace Cruises will be held in June – on Friday, June 13 and Friday, June 27, each from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. RSVP to Nick Dennis (843.706.6603, email).

Coffee with the GM will be held on Saturday, June 14 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Canoe Club Restaurant. This informal monthly gathering enables property owners to meet and discuss issues with General Manager Trip Shine and other members of the Palmetto Bluff Club management team.

… A Lowcountry Boil will be held for property owners on Saturday, June 14. The event will take place at the Canoe Club Pool from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. RSVP to Nick Dennis (843.706.6603, email).

… The Habitat for Humanity Women Build project sponsored by the Women of Palmetto Bluff is almost complete. A Dedication Ceremony and “Pounding” will take place at the Ridgeland home on Saturday, June 14 at 10 a.m. To help the family get off to a great start in their home, WPB members are asked to bring a pound of anything (e.g., sugar, flour, rice, beans, detergent, etc.) to stock the home and pantry. Donations may also be dropped off at the Palmetto Bluff Real Estate office. Husbands, children, extended family and anyone else who might be interested are invited. … On June 1, a Cancellation Policy will take effect for non-complimentary Palmetto Bluff Club events, such as themed dinners, oyster roasts and other fee-based gatherings. If you make a reservation and subsequently learn you cannot attend, please call Nick Dennis at 843.706.6603, ideally at least 24 hours in advance of the event. This will greatly help in managing food cost and staffing. A 50% cancellation fee (per person) will be assessed if a club member fails to cancel their reservation.

… Last call for the 2008 Property Owner Photo Contest. Entries, due June 30, will be judged on composition, image, landscape quality, creativity and lighting. Images should depict scenes on or in the immediate vicinity of Palmetto Bluff. … Looking ahead to July Fourth Weekend: The annual parade on the Village Square will be held on the morning of Friday, July 4 – watch PB Online for setup and start times. The holiday weekend also will feature Breakfast at Wimbledon Socials for property owners at the May River Grill on July 5-6 from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. each day. Shortly following the Sunday finals, the Wilson Lawn & Racquet Club will host a Round Robin for all tennis enthusiasts.

Longfield Stables is now offering huntseat riding instruction, including beginner walk-trot lessons for children and small adults on “Margaret,” the Stables’ large pony. Longfield Stables also offers private carriage tours on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays (with 24 hours notice). Reservations are required for any visit to Longfield Stables – call 843.706.9559.

… Congratulations to Alanna Berger, who (with playing partner Carol Pitzer) won the May River Golf Club Spring Member-Guest Tournament. Paul Masters and partner Joe Trammell finished second. Berger and Pitzer also won the Skills Challenge.

… Caution: Alligator nesting season has begun. Female alligators will build nests and lay eggs on lagoon banks through July, then hatchlings will emerge in late August and September. During these times, female alligators will defend their eggs and babies. For your safety, please be careful to never approach or feed alligators. Always exercise caution when you are in an alligator's habitat and don't allow dogs or small children in or near the edges of freshwater lakes. When fishing, don’t keep fish on the bank next to you or on a stringer, and when cleaning a fish, please discard the remains in a trash receptacle, not back into the lake.
