Melissa Vanacore has been named Equestrian Manager for Longfield Stables. Vanacore spent 10 years in Ocala, Florida – considered the “Horse Capital of the World” – and brings to Palmetto Bluff a wealth of experience riding and managing horses. She will live on site and oversee all programming and facilities, which will include three barns, a covered riding arena, a cross-country practice area and 170 acres of pastures. Tyler Florence’s Lowcountry Celebration will be held November 16-18. Florence, who hosts three programs on The Food Network, and Coastal Living magazine are teaming with Palmetto Bluff to offer participants multiple culinary experiences including a cooking demonstration by the namesake host; a showcase of local chefs, growers, vintners and brewers; and an oyster roast and Lowcountry boil at Moreland. “Unearthing Palmetto Bluff’s History” will be the focus of October’s First Friday Program. Dr. Mary Socci will discuss what an archaeologist does, why it is important and what her team has been working on at Palmetto Bluff. The program begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel on Friday, October 5.

RT’s Market will offer a “Featured Wine of the Week” throughout the fall. Each Friday, samples of that week’s wine, plus assorted food products, will be available for tasting from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and the wine may be purchased at a 10% discount during that time. The first tasting will feature a Simi Cabernet Sauvignon on Friday, October 5. The tasting on Friday, October 12 will deviate from the wine theme and feature a line of hand-crafted, naturally brewed beers including Duvel and Golden Monkey. Croquet & Chardonnay, an instructional series on Six-Wicket Croquet, is being offered at the Wilson Lawn & Racquet Club this fall. … In other croquet news, the Wilson Lawn & Racquet Club is one of six host sites for the Coastal Croquet Clubs Fifth Annual Fall Invitational Tournament. Competition will take place at Palmetto Bluff on Tuesday, October 16 and Saturday, October 20.

… The Women of Palmetto Bluff will hold their next meeting on Thursday, October 25 beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the home of Marilyn McDonald. … A Halloween Fun event will be held on Sunday, October 28 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Fire Pits adjacent to the River House. The complimentary event will include pumpkin decorating, crafts, activities/games, trick-or-treating around the Village, a costume contest, and cookies and cider.

… Congratulations to Smith Anderson of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, who (with partner Greg Gorrel) won the inaugural Wilson Lawn & Racquet Club Member-Guest tournament on September 21-23. … The property owner rate for the Inn’s lagoon-view guest cottages will increase from $300 per night to $350 per night, effective January 1, 2008. Regular guest rates will also increase and will vary seasonally, as opposed to the special owner rate, which is effective year-round, subject to anticipated availability. Also beginning in 2008, the West Wilson rental home discount for May River Golf Club members will change from 50% to 25%, based on 2008 rack pricing. … The Environmental Team’s Fall 2007 Hunting Program begins this month. Limited to four hunters at a time, the hunts are scheduled for Thursday afternoons in October, November and December, excluding Thanksgiving Day. Design Review Fees will increase beginning on January 1, 2008. The fees will be as follows:
Wilson – $5,000 (Custom), $3,000 (Sketchbook); May River Forest – $7,000 (Custom), $5,000 (Sketchbook); Headwaters – $12,500 (Custom); Longfield – $7,500 (Main House), $2,500 (Cottage), $2,500 (Auxiliary Buildings).

Buffalo’s fall operating hours are 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday through Tuesday and 11:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

… A Recycling Dropoff Station is located in the West Wilson North parking lot (adjacent to the May River Golf Club). Bins are in place for plastic, glass, aluminum and paper.

Automobile detailing is available at RT’s Market on Tuesdays and Fridays. Simply call 706.3448 by noon a day in advance to make the arrangements. Prices vary depending on size of automobile and services rendered. The range is $30 to $50 for basic exterior wash, $45 to $65 for deluxe wash, and $100 to $150 for full detailing.
